As the weather continues to warm up, Mississauga residents are reminded to keep an eye on small dogs and pets as coyote sightings increase across the city.

A recent video posted online shows a coyote running through the Meadowvale area in Mississauga.

The video, posted by Reddit user drone_driver24, shows a lone coyote trotting down Montevideo Road in the Lake Aquitine area during broad daylight.

The city of Mississauga is aware of the presence of wild coyotes on its streets and has set up a coyote sightings interactive map to allow residents access to the most up-to-date data on coyote sightings.

The video on reddit was posted on May 20, where the city’s most recent sighting recorded on the map is on May 19 in the Bruzan Crescent and Hunter’s Glen area.

On the city of Mississauga’s website, residents are reminded not to approach a coyote if they happen to see one and practice the following:

  • Stay calm and wait until it goes away
  • Do not turn your back or run. Like dogs, coyotes chase anything that runs.
  • If a coyote approaches, stand tall, waive your arms, clap, yell, make startling movements or throw an object at it to scare it away
  • Startle the animal by opening an umbrella, using a flashlight or activating an audible alarm
