John Metchie III has been well-travelled in his short professional football career, but he made his mark on Thursday Night Football (Nov. 13) with a scoring effort, albeit in a losing cause.

The 24-year-old receiver, now with the New York Jets, scored an easy touchdown to bring his team back from the brink before ultimately falling to the New England Patriots 27-14.

It was the Brampton native’s first touchdown for the Jets after recently being acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 22-yard grab made him the Jets’ leading receiver on the night, making three catches for 45 yards.

Metchie’s moment came late in the third quarter when quarterback Justin Fields found him alone on the left sideline. Metchie hauled in the easy toss and strolled into the endzone, which brought New York within one touchdown of the Patriots. New England quickly struck back, ultimately putting the game out of reach.

The Jets are Metchie’s third NFL organization.

After a standout college career with the Alabama Crimson Tide, he was a second-round pick by the Houston Texans in 2022.

He never quite found an opening for a full-time role in Houston and was traded to the Eagles, who flipped him to New York late last month.

Metchie has overcome serious setbacks in his career. In college, he suffered a major knee injury, and, just a few weeks after his draft selection, he was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, which put his football career on hold as he underwent treatment.

He was back on the field in 2023, and New York fans have been encouraged by his early performance.
