VIDEO: Air1 tracks down two suspects wanted in Toronto shooting

Two suspects wanted in the shooting of a man in Toronto Tuesday afternoon were arrested in Whitby after being tracked for two hours by Durham Police’s Air1 chopper.

Toronto Police responded to a shooting call in the city’s east end at Cosburn Avenue and Greenwood Avenue at 2:21 p.m. on Tuesday after two men got into an ‘altercation,’ with one man producing a gun and shooting the other.

The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Members of the Gun & Gang Task Force – Centralized Shooting Response Team were able to identify the suspect and called in Durham Police and Air1 after receiving information that two suspects involved in the shooting were in the area of Thickson Road and Taunton Road in Whitby.

Air1 conducted an aerial search of the area and located the suspect vehicle in a driveway of a residence in Whitby. Shortly after, the vehicle left the residence and Air1 followed the vehicle into Oshawa, providing updates to Toronto and Durham officers on the ground.

At one point, police say, the suspect got into another vehicle, which Air1 began to follow. “At approximately 5:15 p.m. units were able to box in the vehicle and the suspects fled on foot.”

Air1 followed one suspect, and he was taken into custody. Forty-five minutes later Air1 located the second man in a nearby playground and he was also taken into custody.

Owen Bayi Makouangou, 22, of Oshawa, is charged with nine weapons charges, including discharge firearm “with intent” and cocaine possession. A semi-automatic handgun was seized.

He made his first court appearance Wednesday at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre.

Also in custody in relation to the shooting is Guy-Christophe Bangoura, 26, of Toronto, who was charged with three gun charges and cocaine possession. He also appeared in court in Toronto Wednesday.
