A Brampton resident is facing charges after a person in Wellington County reported losing approximately $45,000 to an investment firm.

After transferring approximately $45,000, the victim became suspicious, Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a press release on May 23.

The firm was not a legitimate business, the Wellington County Crime Unit, with the assistance of the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the Financial Transactions Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC), found after they started an investigation on July 13, 2021.

Nirupan Pirakaspathy, 20, of Brampton was charged with fraud over $5,000, OPP said. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on July 14, 2023.
