The City of Welland has said it will clean up the vandalized sign welcoming visitors to the city.

The sign on Woodland Rd. was marred on March 12, changing “The Rose City” to “The Crack City” with spray paint.

As well, there were other messages with inappropriate language sprayed on.

While many used the vandalism to make their own negative views known online, one poster said, “I don’t understand the hate for Welland. The town is changing. I’ve been living here for three years and there are a lot of great families that are local or moving from somewhere else and that’s not my opinion at all. It’s a small town that’s evolving. I don’t know how Welland used to be but now things are changing. Leave it alone.”

The City is asking anyone with information on those who may be responsible to contact the Niagara Regional Police at (905) 688-4111.
