Uxbridge residents can get disaster relief after tornado

Residents and businesspeople in Uxbridge who were affected by the tornado that happened one month ago today are eligible for compensation from the province.
The province has activated its Disaster Recovery Assistance of Ontario (DRAO) funding, which provides funding for costs and emergency expenses to fix or replace property not covered under insurance. The funding, which residents can apply for until Oct. 17, can be applied to a primary residence and its basic contents. It can also be applied to a small business, farm or not-for-profit organization.
On May 21, a EF-2 (or category 2) tornado struck the centre of Uxbridge as part of one of the most damaging storms in Ontario history. The Insurance Bureau of Canada has said the entire “Derecho” storm is the sixth-most damaging in Canadian history, with an estimated $875 million in insured losses. An estimated $720M of the damage occurred in Ontario, with the rest occurring in Quebec.
Some areas of Uxbridge did not have hydro service restored until May 31 — 10 days after the storm.

Funding applications are also open for Brampton residents affected by the Churchville-area flood in February. They have until July 29 to apply.
