An overnight collision in east Hamilton has resulted in the city’s 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th traffic fatalities of the year.

Shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, police say a male driving a stolen 2004 Toyota Prius was traveling at high speed on Main Street East towards King Street East.

“This male lost control, mounted the curb and struck a concrete hydro pole,” said police. “During the collision the vehicle struck three pedestrians, and debris caused by the collision struck a fourth.”

As the vehicle came to rest, it became engulfed in flames.

Four people have succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead.

Police say they won’t release their names at this time as next-of-kin notifications are ongoing.

“Impairment has not yet been ruled out as a factor involved in this incident,” said police.

The investigation into this collision is ongoing.
