Firefighting crews remain at the scene of a major fire that broke out Saturday evening (Mar. 26) in St. Catharines.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m., officers and emergency personnel responded to a large structure fire at Hernder Estate Winery, located in the area of Eighth Ave. Louth and Seventh St. Louth.

“Due to the size of the fire and the amount of fire fighting resources attending the scene, officers closed a number of streets in the area,” said police.

Police say four employees were inside the building at the time.  All four were evacuated and one was transported from the scene to a local hospital for what is believed to be a minor case of smoke inhalation.

St. Catharines Fire reports that there is no fire damage to the warehouse and production facilities.

The scene remains under the control of the St. Catharines Fire Service, and an investigation into the cause of the fire is expected to begin when the scene has been deemed safe.

Residents are asked to continue avoiding the area to minimize traffic congestion.

The Ministry of Labour has also been notified.
