A heavy rainfall could bring 20 to 40 millimetres of rain or more to southern Ontario.
Environment and Climate Change Canada updated special weather statements this afternoon for “significant rainfall” starting late today (March 8) through Saturday.
The statement includes Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Milton, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby, Ajax and north Durham Region.
A low-pressure system will bring widespread rain across southern Ontario this weekend, the statement reads.
Periods of rain will begin over southwestern Ontario late this afternoon and progress eastward overnight.
The statement says 20 to 40 millimetres of rain could fall but more is possible in some areas.
“At this point, there is still uncertainty regarding rainfall amounts,” the statement reads. “Rainfall warnings may be issued for some regions as the event approaches.”
The rain is expected to taper to flurries Saturday night as colder air moves into the region.
There is snow in the forecast for Sunday.
