Up to 100 mm of rain forecast in parts of southern Ontario

Heavy rain is expected to continue through to Wednesday in parts of southern Ontario.

Total rainfall amounts of 50 to 100 millimetres are possible in areas east of Oshawa, including Belleville, Prince Edward County, Kingston, Napanee, Ottawa and Cornwall, according to a special weather statement from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

A low pressure system is expected to stall over the area on Tuesday, continuing through to Wednesday morning, the statement reads.

Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected in some areas, with rainfall amounts exceeding 50 mm and approaching 100 mm in a few locales, according to Environment Canada.

Environment Canada notes that rainfall amounts will vary widely across the area due to the convective nature of this precipitation.

Rainfall warnings may be issued for some regions as confidence in the forecast increases.

Residents may want to check with their local Conservation Authority or Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources office for information concerning flooding.

Areas north of Ottawa were under a severe thunderstorm watch on Tuesday. Gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour were forecast along with heavy rain. Thunderstorms will become more frequent Tuesday afternoon and could become “violent and give significant amounts of rain and strong wind gusts locally,” Environment Canada said.

Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. Fast-moving and rapidly rising water can sweep vehicles away and damage infrastructure, the watch stated.

The Greater Toronto Area was not included in alerts on Tuesday morning, but more thunderstorms are possible.

There is a 70 per cent chance of showers with a risk of a thunderstorm on Tuesday, according to Environment Canada. There is a 40 per cent chance of showers in the evening.
