UP Express shut down as GO buses replace trains to Toronto Pearson Airport

UPDATE: Transit officials said Union Pearson Express trains are running once again after being taken out of service earlier Tuesday due to a signal issue on the route. (Earlier story appears below)

Union Pearson Express trains aren’t running due to a signal issue on the line, transit officials said early Tuesday afternoon.

In place of the trains, GO shuttle buses are moving passengers between Union Station in downtown Toronto and Toronto Pearson Airport in Mississauga, Metrolinx said.

Metrolinx, the provincial agency that oversees GO Transit, added the GO buses are departing from Terminal 1 on the ground level (post Q4) at the airport until express train service resumes.

When service is operating, the UP Express runs trains every 15 minutes daily until 1 a.m. between downtown Toronto and Pearson.

Officials at Metrolinx said earlier the express train service “has become an integral part of transit in Toronto, having served more than 26 million passengers” since its inception in 2015.

In what at the time was the “first dedicated express air-rail link service in North America,” the UP Express took its first passengers between Pearson and Union Station in downtown Toronto on June 6, 2015, Ontario transit officials said earlier.
