Ukrainian-Canadians honoured by Oshawa with community awards

The founder of the Food Truck Corral in north Oshawa and a group charged with supporting Ukrainian-Canadians in Oshawa and Ukrainians overseas were honoured by the City of Oshawa Monday.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Durham Region Branch, known for waving the Ukrainian flag on highway bridges to elicit support for the people trying to survive in war-torn Ukraine, was awarded the Community Legends Award.
Selected by Oshawa City Council based on nominations from the community, the local branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress was recognized for their support of ongoing cultural initiatives within the city and for improving the quality of life for Oshawa’s new Ukrainian community members.
The E.P. Taylor Windfields Farm Champion Award, presented every four years, honours those who exemplify innovation and demonstrate an ability to overcome adversity.
This year’s recipient is George-Ihor Lysyk – also a Ukrainian-Canadian – who opened up a parcel of land he owned in north Oshawa to food trucks during the pandemic so families could still enjoy a meal together and to help local food businesses operate. This is now known as The Food Truck Corral Oshawa, which is entering its third year of seasonal operation.
Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter said both award recipients illustrate the “community spirit” of Oshawa residents, while Councillor John Gray, who chairs the Community and Operations Services Committee, said the awards ceremony was a “fantastic chance” to recognize culture sector achievements and “showcase how the contributions of businesses and individuals can positively impact our city.”
