UFC fighter from Burlington wins big in Vancouver

Last night was history in the making for Canadians.

Burlington’s own Welterweight Mike Malott champions fight following his guillotine choke submission over Adam Fugitt at the UFC 289 held at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver British Columbia.

31-year-old Malott needed just 10 minutes 53 seconds to win his last five fights, including two in the UFC.

In the first round, Malott hurt Adam Fugitt with a body kick. He then continued to target that area to wear down the taller fighter.

A pair of takedowns for Malott drew in a loud reaction from fans.

Malott clubbed his American opponent  Fugitt with a two-punch combination before sinking into a deep guillotine choke. Malott then rolled into mount, squeezed, and got the tap.

Malott is now 3-0 in the UFC and all 10 of his pro wins have come by way of knockout or submission.

After the fight, Malott took over the mic where he hyped up the crowd by shouting out that the show (UFC 289) was for the Canadians.

“Let’s set one thing straight about tonight: This show is for us. This was a Canadian show! This was Canadian MMA coming back strong, baby!”

It was a clean sweep for Canadians as Malott’s win was the fifth for Canada-born fighters with Marc-Andre Barriault, Jasmine Jasudavicius, Aiemann Zahabi, and Kyle Nelson who were also victorious at UFC 289.
