A U.S. cafe serving organic Yemen coffee is opening in Mississauga.

Matari Coffee Co., a specialty coffee shop serving 100 per cent organic Yemeni coffee, currently has one location in Canton, Michigan.

But a new location will open soon at the new Erin Mills Centre at Ridgeway Drive and Eglinton in Mississauga.

Coffee plants are believed to have originated in Ethiopia but most coffee beans came Yemen until the late 17th century.  And Matari claims the earliest credible evidence of coffee drinking goes back to the 15th century in Yemen.

“While we cannot speak for the coffee of the early centuries, we will let our Matari coffee speaks for itself,” the company states on its website. “For its rich taste and texture remains as authentic as the first cup brewed.”

The shop’s beans come from Matari or Bani Matar, one of the most extensive coffee-growing areas in Yemen. It is renowned for producing the finest types of Yemeni coffee because of its high-altitude regions.

The menu includes espresso drinks such as lattes and a macchiato. There is a dark roast Turkish-style coffee, iced drinks, chai and a Qishr (coffee husks with ginger and cinnamon).

There’s also a selection of sweets including milk cakes and a pistachio cheesecake.
