Two teens charged after counterfeit cash used in pet store purchases in Ontario region

Two teens are facing charges after counterfeit currency was used to acquire legitimate cash at pet supply stores in Ajax and Whitby.

Police responded to a fraud call at Ren’s Pets in the Durham Centre plaza in Ajax on Jan.15 and learned that the two boys purchased a dog crate using counterfeit currency before visiting a second Ren’s Pet on Taunton Road in Whitby,

In Whitby the teens allegedly returned the item in exchange for legal currency before buying an additional item using more counterfeit bills. Later that evening, the suspects returned to the store in an attempt to refund the item again but were confronted by staff and fled.

This month both suspects surrendered themselves to police.

Two Oshawa teens – 16 and 15 – were each charged with two counts of fraud under $5,000 and two counts of using counterfeit money.

Both were released on an Undertaking.
