What started as a verbal argument at a Fort Erie home early this morning (Oct. 6) took a violent and ugly turn as two people got stabbed.

Police raced to the stabbing call at 6:55 a.m. in a home on Marina Dr. near Green Acres Dr. and found a man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s suffering from “serious” stab wounds.

Both were treated by Niagara EMS and Fort Erie Fire Service and shuttled off to an out-of-region hospital.

As it turned out, the pair knew their assailant and explained the argument got so out-of-hand that the suspect allegedly pulled a knife and used it. He then took off on foot.

However, he didn’t get far. The police found him just past 7:10 a.m. on nearby Kennedy Dr. and arrested him.

James Jonathan Smith, 25, of Fort Erie has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault.

Smith is being held in custody for a video bail hearing at the courthouse in St. Catharines tomorrow (Oct. 7).

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the investigating officers by calling 905-0688-4111, option 3, extension 1009524.
