Two new tunnels that will help bring all-day GO Train service to Brampton have been completed.

Metrolinx said the tunnels, a mere three-metres under Hwys. 401 and 409, are now mostly complete and didn’t disrupt traffic on any of the 21 lanes under which they’re buried.

“The project is a significant achievement and provides key infrastructure for the Kitchener line,” said Franca Costantino, Metrolinx’s senior manager of the project delivery team.

“The tunnels will eventually help get more commuters off the roads and onto public transit, improving quality of life for many people.”

The Kitchener line’s local stops are Bramalea, Brampton and Mt. Pleasant. These tunnels are part of the GO Expansion program, which will transform the Kitchener line from a rush hour commuter service to a more convenient transit experience with two-way, all-day rail service.

Each of the tunnels is about 180 metres long and the excavated height of the tunnels is about 11 metres.
