Two MPPs from Brampton will sit in Doug Ford’s Ontario cabinet

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has named two Brampton MPPs to his cabinet, positions they held before the recent provincial election.

Prabmeet Sarkaria of Brampton South and Charmaine Williams of Brampton Centre will continue to be part of Ford’s inner circle and be responsible for leading the direction of their particular ministry.

Williams will continue in her role as Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity, a position she has held since 2022.

The office is responsible for assisting in the removal of barriers so more women can excel as entrepreneurs, in business, leadership roles, skilled trades and in sectors where the need is greatest.

This is done through increasing women’s participation in the workforce by:

• making workplaces safer for women
• supporting affordable childcare options
• offering targeted employment, skills development, and training opportunities
• providing programs that help all women overcome barriers and achieve financial independence – including Indigenous and racialized women, new Canadians, and people with disabilities.

Sarkaria again will be Minister of Transportation a post he has held since 2023.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is in charge of the various aspects of transportation in Ontario, including the establishment and maintenance of the provincial highway system, the registration of vehicles and licensing of drivers, and the policing of provincial roads, enforced by the Ontario Provincial Police and the ministry’s in-house enforcement program (Commercial vehicle enforcement).

Williams and Sarkaria were sworn in Wednesday afternoon in a 90-minute ceremony at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.

Ford said his team, which consists of many familiar faces from his previous cabinet, “will deliver on the government’s mandate to do whatever is necessary to protect Ontario in the face of tariffs from the United States” while also taking care of the province’s economy.

“As Ontario faces one of the greatest challenges in our history, workers and families are counting on us to stand up for their jobs and well-being,” Ford said in a news release. “Our government will double down on our plan to build, train and reskill workers for better jobs and bigger pay cheques, tear down internal trade barriers, retool companies for new customers in new markets, attract more investments and cut through red tape to develop our vast natural resources, including critical minerals in the Ring of Fire. No matter what, we will protect Ontario.”
