Two Hockey Hall of Famers added to star-studded Brampton charity game

Hockey Night in Brampton has landed two of the biggest names in NHL history, with Hall of Famers Paul Coffey and Mike Modano joining an already impressive lineup for this summer’s charity game in support of Brampton’s second hospital.

The City of Brampton announced Monday that the former Stanley Cup champions will lace up for the fifth annual fundraiser on Aug. 19 at the CAA Centre, adding even more star power to one of Canada’s largest charity hockey events.

For local hockey fans, Coffey’s appearance carries an extra hometown connection.

The Hall of Fame defenceman grew up in nearby Malton, now part of Mississauga, before embarking on one of the greatest careers ever by an NHL blueliner. A four-time Stanley Cup champion, Coffey amassed 1,531 career points over 21 seasons—second only to Ray Bourque among NHL defencemen—and captured three Norris Trophies as the league’s top defenceman. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.

Joining him is Modano, widely regarded as the greatest American-born player in NHL history.

The former first-overall draft pick spent 20 seasons with the Minnesota North Stars and Dallas Stars franchise, helping Dallas capture the Stanley Cup in 1999. He finished his career with 561 goals and 1,374 points in 1,499 NHL games before entering the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014.

The pair joins a lineup that already includes current NHL players Dylan Strome of the Washington Capitals and Owen Power of the Buffalo Sabres, along with former NHL stars Ryan Getzlaf, Joe Kocur, Kirk Muller and Cody Hodgson.

Behind the benches, Maple Leafs legends Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clark return as coaches alongside former NHL star Gary Roberts.

Mayor Patrick Brown said adding Coffey and Modano makes this year’s event even more special for hockey fans while helping advance a cause that has united the community.

“Paul Coffey and Mike Modano are two of the most accomplished and recognizable players in hockey history, and we are thrilled to welcome them to Hockey Night in Brampton,” Brown said. “Their addition builds on an already outstanding lineup and gives fans another reason to join us at the CAA Centre.”

Beyond the star power, organizers say the game continues to serve a much larger purpose.

Since launching in 2019, Hockey Night in Brampton has become Canada’s largest charity hockey game, raising millions of dollars to support the William Osler Health System Foundation and the transformation of Peel Memorial into Brampton’s long-awaited second hospital.

Last year’s event raised a record $6.7 million. Over the past two years, Hockey Night in Brampton has generated nearly $21 million while also helping secure a historic $50-million pledge toward the hospital project.

The game takes place Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the CAA Centre, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $36.
