Hamilton Police exchanged gunfire with a man barricaded in a home following an incident that earlier left two people dead.

Police say the situation is now under control in the area of Barton St. and Jones Rd. and there is no longer a threat to the public.

The deaths of two people, a 27-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, both tenants at the residence, have been confirmed. Their names have not been released.

Police say the incident erupted during a dispute between the tenants and a landlord in a residential area of Stoney Creek around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday (May 27).

When police arrived at the scene they discovered the two victims.

Police say a man had then barricaded himself in the house with firearms.

During negotiations with members of the Emergency Response Unit, police say the suspect fired at their armoured vehicle. The suspect later fired additional rounds at which point police returned gunfire. During the tense standoff, neighbouring residents were told to take shelter in their basements.

The Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate.

Police say several people have been interviewed but are appealing for more witnesses to come forward.
