Two men have been convicted for the murder of Oshawa’s Jonathan Gayle-West, an aspiring TSN sportscaster in 2018.

Samir Adem and Salman Ahmed, both 18 at the time of the Gayle-West’s murder, were convicted by an 11-member jury on April 20 for the December 12, 2018 killing.

Gayle-West, 29, was a TSN staffer, described as ambitious in his drive to become an on-air broadcaster. An interview opportunity came up for an on-air job, a step-up from his job as a story editor working shows like SportsCentre with Jay and DanBarDown and on TSN 1050 radio.

With the interview on the horizon, Gayle-West’s mother pushed him to visit his pastor in Toronto for advice. After the consultation on December 12, Gayle-West left on his way home for dinner. He never arrived.

On his way home two men, Adem and Ahmed, somehow managed to get inside Gayle-West’s car. Ultimately, Gayle-West was shot three times around 6 p.m. that evening. One bullet went into his heart.

The Crown prosecutors alleged both men equally responsible for Gayle-West’s murder, describing a car-jacking gone wrong as a likely scenario. Meanwhile defence attorneys for the two accused each blamed the other defendant.

The jury ruled after 10 hours of deliberations to convict both men of second degree murder. As such, pair will serve between 10 and 25 years in prison, to be decided by a judge this summer.
