A pair of local veterans of the Canadian women’s national soccer team were named to the team competing in next month’s Olympics, including the reigning Canadian player of the year.

The youngest of seven daughters, she attended Cardinal Leger Secondary School and University of West Virginia. The defender has been playing internationally for Canada since 2012 and has 101 caps.

Lawrence, 26, played for Brams United locally and was a teammate of Buchanan at West Virginia. The midfielder plays professionally for Paris Saint-Germain in France and has scored seven goals in 93 appearances for the national team.

Canada has been drawn into a preliminary group with Japan, Great Britain and Chile for the first round of the Olympics.
