Two Brampton players named to Canada’s Olympic women’s soccer squad

A pair of local veterans of the Canadian women’s national soccer team were named to the team competing in next month’s Olympics, including the reigning Canadian player of the year.
Kadeisha Buchanan of Brampton and Ashley Lawrence of East Caledon, who player minor soccer in Brampton, are both heading to Tokyo for the 2021 Olympic Games. Both also played for the Canadian team that won a bronze medal at the 2016 games in Brazil.
Buchanan, 25, has been named Canada’s top female soccer player three times, including 2020, and plays professionally for Lyon in France. The youngest of seven daughters, she attended Cardinal Leger Secondary School and University of West Virginia. The defender has been playing internationally for Canada since 2012 and has 101 caps.
Lawrence, 26, played for Brams United locally and was a teammate of Buchanan at West Virginia. The midfielder plays professionally for Paris Saint-Germain in France and has scored seven goals in 93 appearances for the national team.
Canada has been drawn into a preliminary group with Japan, Great Britain and Chile for the first round of the Olympics.
Opening ceremonies are Friday, July 23.
