Mississauga is hosting two big parties in one this Sunday night in the city’s downtown core.

The really big bash, of course, which is celebrated around the world, is the one that rings in the new year — 2024.

Mississauga’s annual New Year’s Eve party at Celebration Square runs from 8 p.m. until midnight and features a wide array of entertainment including several musical concerts, a snowmobile stunt show, an “early midnight countdown” of sorts and the huge fireworks display that caps off the evening in spectacular fashion, city officials say.

There’s another celebration planned for the evening as well. The New Year’s Eve party will also serve as the launch of 50th anniversary festivities for the City of Mississauga, which was formed in 1974.

Numerous events and tributes are planned throughout 2024 to mark the 50th birthday of Canada’s seventh-largest city.

“Say goodbye to 2023 and hello to 2024 as you count down to the new year and kick off Mississauga’s 50th anniversary at Mississauga Celebration Square,” city officials said in a news release. “Don’t think your kids will make it to midnight? Don’t worry — this celebration includes an early confetti countdown for the young and young at heart.”

Ice skating, food trucks and more are also on tap for the evening on Sunday. Admission is free.

“Pack your skates and bring your appetite over to the square for some winter-friendly activities and tasty treats at the food trucks,” city officials say.

Canadian music legend and Mississauga’s own Shawn Desman will headline the stage with his iconic pop tracks. He’ll be joined by RnB sensation Shay Lia and Afro-beats rising star Nonso Amadi.

Following is a list of events planned for the evening:

  • 8 p.m. – NYE Junior with entertainment, snowmobile stunt show and a confetti countdown
  • 9 p.m. – Nonso Amadi, Afro-beats rising star
  • 10 p.m. – Shay Lia, RnB sensation
  • 10:30 p.m. – Snowmobile stunt show
  • 11 p.m. – Shawn Desman, Canadian music sensation and platinum pop artist
  • 11:55 p.m. Countdown featuring remarks from Acting Mayor John Kovac, Ward 4 councillor
  • 12 a.m. – Live fireworks finale

City officials also note there will be road closures in Mississauga’s downtown core starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday and lasting until 1 a.m. Visit the city’s website for more details.
