Car crashes into horse in Ontario.

One person was seriously injured when the horse they were riding was struck by a truck in a southern Ontario waterfront community on Thursday morning.

South Bruce OPP said in a news release the person’s injuries, though serious, aren’t considered to be “life altering or life threatening.”

Police said two people were riding their horses on King Street in Kincardine just before 10 a.m. when one of the animals was spooked by noise from nearby construction work. The small community is located about 85 kilometres southwest of Owen Sound on the shores of Lake Huron.

The frightened horse ran into traffic, where it was struck by the vehicle. The person riding the horse was quickly taken to hospital, police said.

It’s not known what injuries the horse suffered.

The initial call to police reported that a truck had collided with a horse-and-buggy, but officers who subsequently arrived at the scene learned there was no buggy involved.

Police remind drivers in small Ontario towns “to slow down and move over for vulnerable road users such as horses, horse-and-buggy, bicycles and tractors.”

They add that “when it comes to meeting a horse, slow down and be patient, pass the horse wide and slow, avoid actions that could spook the horse such as sounding your horn or revving your engine.”
