Transit users in Durham Region will be paying a little more to ride the buses next month, with fares rising ten cents for adult cash payments.
All riders will pay more as of July 1, with PRESTO fares going up nine cents for adult riders from $3.73 to $3.84 and cash payments rising to $4.85 from $4.75. The monthly PRESTO pass jumps $4 to $138.24.
Investments in new services, improved connections, and major projects like the Durham‑Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit that are making transit “more accessible and reliable” are resulting in the fare increases, Durham Region Transit said.
“Fare adjustments help support this growth – enabling service improvements, advancing sustainability, and building a modern transit system that delivers long-term value for customers across the region.”
Youth (13 to 19) fares with PRESTO will rise a dime to $3.46 as of July 1, with cash fares going up to $4.85 (from $4.75 and monthly passes (with the PRESTO card) increasing from $107.42 to $110.59.
Seniors (65 and older) will see just a seven-cent increase for PRESTO users to $2.46, with cash payments going up ten cents to $3.55. The monthly PRESTO pass fee will go up to $55.30 from $53.71.
Pay-as-you-go with PRESTO (for the first 14 trips) is going up to $3.84 from $3.73), with the TAP monthly pass rising from $52.22 to $53.76.
The upcoming fare increase is part of Durham Transit’s10-year service and financing strategy, which aims to increase bus service by 127 per cent by 2032; enhance service frequency and expand the transit network; explore new technologies and invest in modern infrastructure.
