Traffic stop near Peterborough uncovers 42 grams of fentanyl in Oshawa driver’s car, OPP allege

An Oshawa man faces charges after a traffic stop in Cavan-Monaghan Township near Peterborough allegedly discovered 42 grams of fentanyl in the car.
The OPP responded to a traffic complaint around 4:30 p.m. March 26. Officers found the car on Highway 28 and discovered the driver was allegedly high on drugs. The OPP claims a search of the car found 42 grams of fentanyl and $1,700 in Canadian cash.
Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is 100 times more potent than morphine. It is often used to cut other drugs, such as heroin, to increase the drug’s effect at a low cost. The United States Drug Enforcement Agency considers 0.2 grams as a potentially fatal dose.
The driver, Michael Miller, 44 of Oshawa, is charged with possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, operation while impaired by drugs and possession of proceeds obtained by crime under $5,000.
As an automatic result of his impaired charges, Miller’s vehicle was impounded for a week and his licence was suspended for 90 days.
Miller will appear in a Peterborough courtroom on April 27.
