Peel Regional Police found a number of trucks to be unsafe during a week-long commercial vehicle safety blitz last week.

Inspectors checking vehicles for mechanical issues found several things in their searches, but on one particular truck they found something they weren’t at all expecting–a nest full of baby birds.

After pulling aside a truck near Pearson Airport in Mississauga, police officers trained to inspect commercial vehicles did their thing and began looking for any mechanical or other safety issues with the truck.

Instead, they found a bird nest occupied by several hatchlings. It was tucked underneath the frame of the vehicle, resting by one of the large truck tires.

“The truck passed inspection, and the driver was educated on conducting a proper (commercial motor vehicle) inspection,” Peel police tweeted today (May 25). “Driver said he will reunite the babies with their parents.”

The commercial vehicle safety blitz in Mississauga and Brampton was part of a nationwide effort dubbed Canada Road Safety Week.

Peel police have a team of 12 to 14 Road Safety officers who are trained and certified to inspect trucks for safety issues. They were out in full force last week checking large trucks.

The nationwide road safety initiative was staged in partnership with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and police services across Canada.

In addition to unsafe trucks, cops were also cracking down on road safety violations, zeroing in on dangerous and impaired drivers, street racing, distracted driving and other offences.
