UPDATE: Peel Public Works says the closures are estimated to last “for at least 12 hours.”

Part of a busy downtown intersection is closed “until further notice” due to a watermain break, Peel region says.

The break was reported by Peel Public Works shortly after 9 a.m. on Friday at the intersection of Queen Street and Main Street, also known as the Four Corners in Brampton.

The region says eastbound Queen Street and northbound Main Street are closed to traffic at the Four Corners intersection “until further notice.”

Main Street North is closed from Wellington Street to Queen Street, and Queen Street East is closed from George Street to Main Street, Peel Public Works says.

In an update on Friday the region said the closures are expected to last “for at least 12 hours.” Drivers may want to avoid the area while repairs are underway.

Brampton is aiming to transform the city’s downtown through the Revitalization Streetscape Project with plans for improved infrastructure, more public spaces, refurbished roads and sidewalks with granite pavers. The project includes a new bike path, street furniture and replacing planters.

The streetscaping project got more than $16 million in funding from the city in 2021 while a report this year showed the increased price of materials, construction and design work have led to an additional $6,515,000 in costs.
