Town to host official opening for Oakville’s newest skateboard park

The Town of Oakville is inviting the public to join them for the official opening of the new Cornwall Road Sports Park next Saturday (Sept. 23).
Residents are invited to bring their skateboard, scooter or bike from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. to the new 300-square-metre park located at the intersection Cornwall Rd. and Watson Ave.
The event will also be celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony, a DJ, skateboard/scooter demonstrations and free giveaways.
“Try riding in the bowl that incorporates waves and islands,” said the Town of Oakville.
Cornwall Road Sports Park also has two lit hardball diamonds, a washroom facility, children’s playground and walking trails.
With the latest addition, Oakville now has six skateboard facilities located in town parks.
Town Council approved the new facility back in May of 2021 and approved $250,000 in funding to build the skateboard project with the intention of completing installation by the fall of 2021.
Several residents would express concerns over the facility and as a result the town conducted a user survey in August of 2021 to better understand the needs.
The biggest change was a cast-in-place concrete skateboard facility was preferred, instead of a pre-fabricated system as originally proposed.
The detailed design was completed in June of 2022, but the process of hiring a qualified contractor was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
