Town of Milton takes stand against bullying by participating in International Day of Pink

The Town of Milton is taking a stand against bullying and discrimination toward the 2SLGBTQIA+ community by participating in the International Day of Pink.

The International Day of Pink, which falls this year on Apr. 13, is a worldwide anti-bullying and anti-homophobia event.

While it is similar to Pink Shirt Day, the International Day of Pink is specifically aimed at anti-LGBTQ+ bullying.

According to the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, the International Day of Pink was started in Nova Scotia when two straight high school students saw a gay student, who was wearing a pink shirt, being bullied.

The two students intervened and purchased pink shirts to show their solidarity in hopes of preventing homophobic and transphobic bullying. A few days later, the students got everyone at school to wear pink.

As a result, the Town of Milton is encouraging residents to wear pink to show their solidarity.

“We encourage residents to wear pink to show their solidarity in combatting bullying and discrimination against the 2SLGBTQIA+ community,” said the Town of Milton on Twitter.
