The Town of Milton is encouraging the community to participate in the Provincial Day of Action on Litter.

The Provincial Day of Action on Litter, which falls this year on May 10, is celebrated annually across Ontario on the second Tuesday of May.

This initiative is meant to encourage communities across the province to take action to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills or becoming litter.

According to provincial data, it is estimated that almost 10,000 tonnes of plastic debris enter Ontario’s lakes and rivers each year.

Additionally, in Ontario, almost 50 per cent of waste is diverted through blue box or green bins and 70 per cent of general waste materials from residential, commercial and industrial locations end up in landfills.

As a result, the Town of Milton is encouraging the community to participate by putting litter in its proper place, bringing awareness to the impacts of waste on the environment and taking action at home and outdoors.

“We can all help #MiltonON to stay beautiful & clean by picking up litter in public spaces & neighbourhoods,” said the Town of Milton on Twitter.
