Golfers helped raise over $275,000 that will help make Brampton’s second hospital a reality.
The sold-out Osler Open came to TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in Caledon this week, the same course where the RBC Canadian Open golf tournament wrapped up earlier this month.
Now in its 19th year, the Osler Open: Brampton Invitational raised $278,625 this year in support of the Peel Memorial Centre upgrade project, transforming the facility into Brampton’s second hospital.
The more than a billion-dollar revamp project involves a significant expansion of the existing Peel Memorial, with plans for a new 24-hour Emergency Department replacing the existing Urgent Care Centre, 250 inpatient beds with space for more in the future.
Osler says the upgrades will help the health system meet the increasing health care needs of one of Canada’s most diverse and fastest-growing cities, as Brampton’s population is expected to exceed one million residents by 2051.

“Today wasn’t just about golf. It was about a community coming together to invest in its future,” said Shelagh Barry, interim president and CEO of the William Osler Health System Foundation. “Every registration, sponsorship, donation, and volunteer contribution brought us one step closer to a hospital that will serve Brampton families for generations. That’s the true impact of the Osler Open.”
The Ontario government has committed some $46.8 million in capital planning funding to build the new hospital, which will include a new “state-of-the-art” emergency department, and expanded post-acute care services that will help free up beds at Brampton Civic Hospital, the province says.
First opened over 100 years ago, the first Peel Memorial Centre had just 12 beds and a nursery in the estate home of William Elliot – a farmer and politician who represented Peel in the House of Commons from 1878 to 1882.
No date has been given for when the upgrades will be completed, Osler says it has signed a deal with Bird Design-Build Construction Inc. for the development phase to advance the project requirements including the design, schedule and pricing.
“There will come a day when someone arrives at the new Peel Memorial Hospital during one of the most difficult moments of their life. They may never know the individuals who support today’s tournament, but they will benefit from their generosity. This is the lasting impact of community philanthropy—supporting care when it matters most,” said Dr. Frank Martino, president and CEO of the William Osler Health System.
