Toronto Police have identified the officer killed this afternoon in a shooting in Mississauga, police described as an “ambush attack” as Constable Andrew Hong.

Hong, 48, was in Mississauga for a training program with York Region and Peel Region officers. When the program broke for lunch Hong went to the Tim Hortons on Argentia Rd and Winston Churchill Blvd.

While at the Tim Hortons, an unidentified suspect opened fire striking and killing Hong and injuring another person. The gunman fled the scene in a dark Jeep Cherokee.

Toronto Police Chief James Ramer in a press conference at 8 p.m. confirmed Hong’s identity and that he is survived by his wife, parents and two children. Hong, a 22 year veteran of the force, was pronounced dead on scene. The other victim remains in hospital.

Opening the press conference Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah described the shooting as “an unprovoked and ambush attack.”

The Jeep was next spotted in Milton near an auto body shop on Bronte St. Three more people were shot there on of who died on scene. The other two were taken to a GTA trauma centre. One is stable the other is in critical conditions.

The suspect was later found by Halton officers in Hamilton. During the interaction with police the suspect was shot and killed in Hamilton Cemetery. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which looks into interactions with police that involve death or injury, has invoked their mandate to investigate.

Given the inter-jurisdictional nature of events, Hamilton, Halton and Peel Regional police are working together to investigate. However, Peel police are spearheading the investigation and have take a “coordinating role,” according to Duraiappah.
