Two Toronto men have been charged after defrauding an elderly Whitby man and attempting to bilk a second man in a grandparent scam.

On Wednesday, December 28 the first victim was contacted by a person claiming to be a police officer, stating that the victim’s grandson had been arrested and fine to avoid charges was $9,000. The suspects then attended the man’s residence under the guise of being court officers and collected the money.

The victim was again contacted on December 29, requesting more money, prompting a call to police with suspect descriptors.

On Thursday, January 5 a second person was contacted by a person claiming to be a court officer, stating they would attend the residence to pick up cash as the victim’s grandson had been in an accident. Police were immediately contacted and the suspects were taken into custody.

Mohamed Ali, 27, and Weheliye Ali, 24, are each charged with two counts of fraud over $5000 and participate in criminal organization.

Both were released on an Undertaking.

Durham Police are reminding residents who receive any unanticipated requests for money to be extremely cautious and speak to a family member or trusted advisor for support.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact D/Cst. Finley of the DRPS – Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5358.
