Toronto brewery closes permanently due to ‘numerous’ challenges

After four years in Toronto, an Ontario-based brewery is shutting down its Liberty Village location, much to the disappointment of regulars.

Something in the Water Brewery Co. announced on Monday over Instagram that it has closed its only Toronto location permanently. The brewpub opened in 2022 and was an expansion of the Ontario company’s Kingston brewery.

“The challenges have been numerous, and ultimately too great to overcome,” the post by Something in the Water Brewery reads, with staff saying the announcement comes “with a heavy heart.”

“Liberty is where it all began for (Something in the Water) and we will forever cherish the beer release parties, TFC days, Argos game days, private events, and each and every guest that chose to walk through our front door,” the brewery said.

The Ontario company prides itself on “curious beers,” like the Around the Raspberry Sour Pale Ale, the Liberty’s Farm to Glass Pilsner and the Tortuga Havy IPA. Something in the Water Brewery says it has won a World Beer Award for its Brunch Stout, a Canadian Brewing Award for our Sittler 10 Point Lager, and an Ontario Brewing Award for our Yacht Rock Gose, among others.

Fans of the brewery lamented the closing on Instagram. “Sad news. You will be missed! All the best in Kingston,” one said. “The Peanut Butter and Jam beer was epic. You will be missed,” said another.

Staff were alerted to the closing in a group chat message, according to posts on social media. The brewery operated Ghost Taco as a partnership at the brewery’s Toronto location, which has also been closed.
