A tornado warning has been issued for parts of southwestern Ontario as a severe thunderstorm hunkers down over the region.

Environment Canada says residents in and around Windsor, Essex and Chatham-Kent should exercise extra care and attention.

The weather office says a line of storms capable of producing a tornado was spotted from 11 kilometres northwest of LaSalle to 10 kilometres west of Amherstburg, moving east at 90 km/h.

Meteorologists say the storm is bringing with it the chance of damaging wind gusts of 100 kilometres an hour, along with large hail and torrential downpours.

They say due to the storm being a “dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” people are urged to take cover in a basement, interior room, or a sturdy shelter.

Meanwhile, residents from London to Owen Sound are under a rainfall warning, where upwards of 30 millimetres is expected to fall by this morning.
