Tornado risk for parts of Ontario amid severe storm threat

There is a risk of strong storms in parts of Ontario over the next couple of days.

Environment Canada has issued thunderstorm outlooks which say that strong winds, hail, and even tornadoes are possible.

The storm threat is for northern areas of the province on Thursday and Friday.

Here’s a look at what’s expected:

Thursday p.m.

After a risk of isolated thunderstorms Thursday morning for northwestern parts of the province, more storms are possible in the afternoon and evening.

For location A on the map below, which covers portions of northern and far northern Ontario, scattered thunderstorms are likely, Environment Canada said.

“Some of these thunderstorms will have the potential to produce wind gusts up to 90 km/h and hail up to 3 cm,” forecasters said.

Broken tree branches, downed trees, property damage, and injuries are all possible.

Up to 40 mm of rain could fall locally.

Other areas shaded in grey on the map could see isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening that bring up to 30 mm of rain locally.

Friday

On Friday, even more severe thunderstorms are likely to develop in the afternoon and continue through the evening.

Location B on the map below, which covers parts of northwestern Ontario including Kenora, could see wind gusts up to 110 km/h, hail that is 5 cm in diameter, and a risk of tornadoes.

Up to 30 mm of rain could fall locally.

Location A is also likely to see strong thunderstorms with possible wind gusts up to 110 km/h, hail that is 3 cm in diameter, and up to 40 mm of rain locally.

Environment Canada made no mention of a tornado risk for that area.

Forecasters said downed trees, property damage, injuries, and power outages could occur.

Areas shaded in grey, meanwhile, could see isolated thunderstorms with up to 15 mm of rain.
