Top 5 Trendy Foods in Oakville, Burlington, and Milton

Wanting to be ‘trendy’ doesn’t necessarily have to result in groan-inducing eyerolls from your fam, especially when it comes to eating out in Oakville, Burlington, and Milton. There are plenty of very on-trend restos and cafes which are legit in keeping pace with the latest and (perhaps questionably greatest) stylistic modifications and culinary experiments. Whether you love or loathe all things hipster, some of these items are hits, and some are still making their way to our neck of the woods. Here are the top 5 trendy foods we’ve seen across Halton.

5. Overnight Oats

Green Press is the place to find a tasty, next-best-thing-from-homemade jar of overnight oats. ‘Portability is key’ (as I’ve been saying since high school, when I’d intentionally buy juice boxes to throw in a backpack, cupholder, etc.). This jar of oats – topped, of course, with strawberries and blueberries – almost tastes homemade. This is an easy way to cut your morning routine and we dig the fact that it’s a very healthy option when you’re on the go. In addition to the environmentally-friendly packaging, this berry oatmeal is vegan and gluten-free. We’d love to see more local places offer this option.

4. Charcoal

From charocal lemonade at Farmer Jack’s on Appleby to dark-hued gelato at Piazza Bistro, you’ll find charcoal-infused items at a few places across Halton. Why’s it such a thing? Gen Y, of course. (In fact, my little millennial bro uses charcoal to brush his teeth). It has an earthy taste, and looks shockingly cool. Activated charcoal isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. If you’re a rookie, try it out and let us know what the verdict is!

3.  Cauliflower

Eating your vegetables has never been sexier. Mind you, they’re battered, deep-fried, then coated in a tangy or salty sauce. We’ve pigged out on some bomb cauliflower at Bru, Plank, The Martini House, The Coop, and a few other places. Now, when your mom calls to ask what you’ve eaten (and reminds you to take your vitamins and vegetables) you can proudly tell her you already did! 2. Jackfruit

Boon Burger’s got jackfruit in at least two of its dishes: the Jamaican Me Crazy burger and the Pulled Jackfruit Poutine. If you’re unfamiliar with Asian food, jackfruit is a nutrient-dense miracle food of sorts traced back to India. It also makes a perfect stand-in for pork (especially for the vegans in your life and those who choose to go plant-based from time to time). You can shred it and douse it in BBQ sauce … Good luck noticing the difference when you’re ravenous on #legday after 20 minutes of walking lunges and Bulgarian split squats! Lucky for you, it’s now in Burlington and Oakville.

1. Matcha Green Tea

One of my most favourite women on Instagram, Candice Kumai, is all about that matcha and you should be, too. She’s an American author, chef, and ‘golden girl of wellness.’ Matcha is another Asian superfood packed with antioxidants (let’s face it: ethnic women generally have incredible skin and age like absolute goddesses … You deserve to age well, too!). So, where can you find it locally? Milton’s Hawthorne Cafe offers up a matcha latte, among other chic and on-trend things. Matcha is all the rage in NYC and if it’s cool enough for New Yorkers then we’d love to see more places offering up some matcha-fused eats and bevvies. 

BONUS: Avocado

This little fatty fruit is on virtually every rad menu, from Wundeba (try the Wundeba Caesar salad with avocado garlic dressing — yum!) to Lettuce Love and its awesome Power Bowl. If you’re out in Milton, Fresh Addicts is all about the greenery, from the tabletops to the bowls. The menu offers bowls, cold-pressed juices, and wraps (while the portions are small, you’ll feel better about making positive dietary choices, #amirite).  And we know we’re stating the obvious here but Kerr Street Cafe is all about that amazing avocado toast.
