Every once in awhile, you need to get out of town and enjoy something unique a little further from home. Even though we’re pretty far from Valentine’s Day, it’s never too early (or too late) to visit a romantic hotel that’s known for its quaint and charming atmosphere.

Also, these hotels are unique and renowned enough to visit even if you’re not coupled up.

Girl’s (or boy’s) weekend, anyone?

Here are the top five romantic hotels you have to visit that are just a little outside the city.

5) Hazelton Hotel

If you don’t want to travel too far, the Hazelton Hotel — situated in Toronto’s chic Yorkville neighbourhood — is a good choice if you don’t mind forking over a little extra dough (some rooms cost about $600+ a night). One of the first luxury hotels in T.O., the sophisticated destination boasts “sexy, dramatic interiors” designed by Yabu Pushelberg’s firm. If you’re fancy, this space also offers an art collection and a private screening room. It’s also the home of acclaimed chef Mark McEwan’s ONE Restaurant.

2) Langdon Hall

Located in Cambridge, Ont., this historical mansion was transformed into a hotel and spa in 1989 and has been providing guests with a country-chic experience ever since. If you’re going away for a romantic weekend, you can purchase a Surprise and Delight romance package (featuring a bottle of wine, a three-course dinner and breakfast) for $670-$765. There’s also a Celebrations package that comes with a half-bottle of champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries (also $670-$765).

3) Stone Gate Inn

If you travel to Orillia with any regularity (perhaps to play some slots or see ‘80s bands at Casino Rama), you might want to stop at the Stone Gate Inn. A luxury boutique hotel, the Inn offers 48 spacious and tastefully decorated suites, some of which come equipped with gas fireplaces. On Friday evenings from 5:00-8:00 p.m., the hotel hosts an evening reception with hors d’oeuvres. If you’re riding solo (or just spending time with friends), the hotel offers a Girl’s Getaway package for $462-$482 (per group of four) that features your choice of room combinations, a $25 voucher for and transportation to Cosmo’s Ristorante, one bottle of wine, a cheese and biscuit platter and deluxe continental breakfast for four. If you want to plan something romantic (or if you want to propose), you can speak to one of the hotel’s special occasion planners about customizing your trip.

2) Idlewyld Inn and Spa

If you’re ever traveling to London, Ont., this place might be good to check out if you’re in the mood for luxury and romance. This historical building has been around since 1878 and merges traditional grandeur with modern sophistication. The space offers 21 unique suites, an on-site spa and a fine dining restaurant. In terms of fun, this place hosts a few notable events. If it’s romance you’re looking for, you can book a Bliss Package ($369.51-$398.89) that includes a couple’s massage, a $75 credit towards dinner in the hotel restaurant and a deluxe continental breakfast.

 1) The Charles Hotel

Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of the most stunning regions in Ontario and it boasts a ton of gorgeous small-scale hotels that make any trip to the region that much more luxurious. The Charles Hotel offers a lot in the way of atmosphere, boasting flower gardens, a parlour and a verandah. While this might feel like more of a summer retreat, Niagara-on-the-Lake is gorgeous all year round and wineries tend to be a little less crowded.
