Is there really anything better than a mittful of delicious refried beans, rice, veggies, guac, hot sauce and protein of your choice?

Hamilton loves burritos for the same reason we love our sandwiches: they’re delicious, convenient and affordable.

There’s no shortage of options here in the city also. I won’t lie, it was really hard to narrow the list down and rank them but here are the Top 5 places to get a burrito in Hamilton.

5. Thirsty Cactus
Here is another special place in Hamilton. Located in the heart of Dundas, this Southwestern-inspired eatery has been a hotspot for years. You’d be hard-pressed to find an item on the menu that isn’t incredible but their burritos are a standout. I think it’s their Guadalajara sauce that really makes this puppy sing. It’s a pretty standard concoction as far as burritos go, but it’s just so balanced in flavour and textures. Throw in a pint from the incredible selection of beers they have on tap and the first-rate service and you got yourself a night (or lunch) to remember at the Thirsty Cactus.

4. XXX Burrito
This was a big burrito. You will NOT leave hungry. These little bundles of joy are stuffed with rice, beans, guac, onions, tomatoes, cheese and the meat of your choice (they’ll put whatever you want in there, really). They have gorgeous house sauce though that just ties everything together in a lovely little bow. The sauce subtle but exactly what a burrito needs: a smokey heat that doesn’t overpower the fresh taste of everything else. These burritos are also great value at under $10 for a large. They also have a lot of specials. XXX is really holding their own in their little corner of the East End.

3. Ole Gourmet

I seriously cannot get enough of this place. I tried their speciality chicken chipotle burrito with all the fixings and again, as with the nachos, this place delivered in spades. The burrito is packed with rice (love their rice), beans, veggies, cheese and juicy chunks of chicken. Everything together is simply ooey gooey amazing goodness. The smokey chipotle, fresh veg and that incredible rice of theirs with their sauce is really all you need in a burrito. Again, this place was packed with students on their lunch break but it’s a testament to the quality and value of the food. Finally, I’m going to put it out there: Ole Gourmet has the BEST service.

2. Maria’s Tortas Jalisco

Here’s another little family-owned hotspot turning out some incredible authentic Mexican cuisine in our lucky community. I came for the burritos but I will return for everything else on this menu (they have wet burritos and I’m not quite sure what that means but I know I want to find out). I ordered the standard chicken burritos with everything they could offer. I gotta say, this was a super-stuffed dream. The crunch of the onions and corn against the backdrop of sauces, rice, chicken and beans is a beautiful thing. There were some pickled jalapenos in there too that I’m not typically a fan of but I really enjoyed in this context. At just under $10, I didn’t leave hungry and I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the ingredients and the fact that this didn’t fall apart while I was eating it.

1. Hub Burritos

I don’t know why but after trying all of the other burritos on this list, I think my expectations were a little low for Hub Burritos. It gives me great pleasure, for so many reasons, to say I was wrong. This burrito was truly unique and so, so, so good. I ordered the chicken again and asked for pretty much everything they had on it, including their house sauce. It wasn’t exactly pretty to look at when you get into it, but it tasted divine. The flavours of the standard veggies, chicken, beans, rice and cheese soared to new heights on the wings of Hub’s house sauce that carries a hint of cumin (possibly curry?) and smoke. It was so different from everything else and just such a deliciously singular flavour that I couldn’t keep Hub out of the No. 1 spot. The fact that this burrito comes in under $10 is also pretty awesome.
