One of the most popular Caribbean dishes is oxtail. If done right, it can be one of the most tender and flavourful meat dishes there is, beating out all other Caribbean and non-Caribbean animal delicacies.

If you have never had it, you have to try it out. If you’re not sure what it is, it’s basically cow tail that is slow cooked as a stew or braised. If done right, the meat is fall-off-the-bone tender.

Here are the top five places for ox tail in Mississauga:

5 – Papa Moe’s

Located in a plaza on Rathburn just east of Mavis Road in the Long and McQuade plaza is Papa Moe’s. This fresh resto just feels new. The owner (Papa Moe?) served us and told us the restaurant recently moved to its current location. He explained the food and the cooking process for all the Caribbean dishes on the menu, providing exceptional service along with on-point grub. The resto serves everything from jerk chicken to chicken curry to, of course, oxtail. The meat was, as expected, fall-off-the-bone tender.

4 – Potluck Caribbean

Located in the newer plaza on the northwest corner of Derry and McLaughlin is Potluck Caribbean restaurant. I’ve been here a few times and always thought the food was spot on, but the service is always lacking and they never smile. Luckily we weren’t there for the service. Like most good Caribbean places, this resto is popular for lunch and after work take out. Potluck has all the popular Caribbean dishes to offer and all their dishes are extremely flavourful, including the oxtail.

3 – Charlie’s

Charlie’s is located right in the heart of Mississauga at HWY 10/Dundas across the street from my old high school, TLK! Charlie’s has been on insauga.com lists before for best roti and ethnic grocery stores. The restaurant can fit about 25-30 people, so you’re much more likely to get a table here than most Caribbean restaurants. The oxtail was nice and tender and had a real good flavour to it. This was also the most oxtail we got from any of the top 5’s. A little advice: get their hot sauce. It’s so good they bottle it and sell it at the grocery store. It was actually sold out when we went!

2 – VOY Jamaican Restaurant

There is a new Jamaican restaurant in Port Credit and it’s called VOY. This is kind of a big deal, as there weren’t any Caribbean restos in Port Credit before this place decided to set up shop. Voy is probably the nicest and most atmospheric Jamaican restaurant around. We always ask restos what they are known for and our server, without hesitation, said oxtail. So we had it (as seen above). It was fall off the bone tender and seasoned perfectly and served with a side of rice, beans and vegetables. It might be a little pricey at $18, but it’s still delicious.

1 – Shandra’s

Tucked away in a hidden strip mall on Eglinton between Tomken and Dixie is Shandra’s Roti Shop — one of the best and most popular roti shops. Shandra’s has been around for 21 years and that speaks volumes. With a variety of roti, rice dishes, oxtail and Caribbean appetizers, you can’t leave without being satisfied. Today we tried the oxtail and it was delicious. The meat was shaping up to be the best on the list until we hit the number one spot (sorry, Shandra!).
