Over the past few years, Square One has changed quite dramatically, welcoming a host of new stores (many of them high end) and restaurants.

Not content to be tired or stagnant (nor should it be), Mississauga’s most iconic mall is often welcoming new retailers and dining establishments—and this year has been no different. Over the past few months, the mall has welcomed a number of new stores and restos that have gotten people taking.

Some notable new openings? Popular ramen joint Sansotei, sushi burrito resto SU&BU, Japanese variety store Miniso and renowned British jewellery store Links of London.

But, since the shopping centre is constantly growing, there are more shops and restaurants coming.

Here’s a look at five places we think you might be most excited about:

5) Soia & Kyo

Square One started offering shoppers a little French-Canadian flair when it welcomed Simons to the fold a few short years ago. Now, it’s about to welcome Soia & Kyo, a Montreal-based outerwear brand, to the shopping centre sometime this summer (according to Square One’s website). According to its Facebook page, Soia & Kyo is a family-run company that supports local production and features exclusive, made-in-Canada collections. As for what it offers, think classic trench coats, suede pieces, leather apparel, rainwear and more.

4) Sweet Jesus

This one is big. A very popular and on-trend ice cream joint–the kind that boasts around-the-block lineups and millions of Instagram selfies and Facebook check-ins–is headed to our neck of the woods. Sweet Jesus, the brand known for its hand-crafted soft serve and creative (and gorgeous) toppings, has announced that it’s opening a location at Square One. As far as flavours go, ice cream aficionados can try the brand’s Red Rapture cone (with vanilla soft serve, red velvet cake, cream cheese icing, raspberry puree and meringue crumble), the Oh Sweet Baby Jesus! (with caramel soft serve, peanut butter and caramel sauce, chocolate-peanut crumble and chocolate sauce), the Bangin’ Brownie (with chocolate soft serve, caramel, chocolate sauce, brownie bits and chocolate cookie crumble) and more. The company also offers a host of espresso-based beverages, including lattes, flat whites, cortados and more.

3) Uniqlo

Uniqlo, the Japanese retail giant, is opening four new Canadian stores in fall 2018. Three locations are in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and that includes Square One Shopping Centre. The first Uniqlo store opened in Japan in 1984 and has expanded into global markets with more than 2,000 stores across the globe. The casual apparel line has amassed a cult-like following, due to its innovative clothing and accessory designs such as the HeatTech line at Uniqlo – it’s a fabric that turns moisture into heat (perfect for Canada’s cold winter climate!). The Square One store will measure approximately 15,000 sq. ft. and be located on one floor. Uniqlo has already opened at Toronto’s Eaton Centre and Yorkdale, so we know Mississauga residents will be happy to have one close by.

2) Food District

Square One is about to gain more traction with bonafide foodies. The mall’s west expansion development is well underway with an opening date slated for November, and it’ll come complete with an elevated experience for foodie tourists and locals alike. The Food District is opening in spring 2019 and it’ll have a focus on offering local, handmade and high-quality foods in a setting that embraces both new- and old-world food emporiums. With more than 34,000 sq. ft., the Food District will offer space to meet, explore and share the love of food through tastings, cooking classes, dinner parties, book signings and other special events.

1) Rec Room

When this news broke, it was huge. A little over a year ago, Cineplex announced that it plans to open a brand new Rec Room location at Square One. If you haven’t heard of The Rec Room, Cineplex defines it as “Canada’s newest hotspot for ‘Eats and Entertainment.’” The Rec Room is basically a major entertainment complex that fuses food and activities. The Square One location will take shape in the north end of the complex (where Target was located) and will occupy about 44,000 square feet of space and two full floors. The facility will offer multiple restaurants—including an upscale casual one called Three10—bars, games and more.
