What does food mean to you?
What a loaded question. Well, we all have to eat, right? But, there’s a huge difference between eating just for the sake of quieting your grumbling stomach and eating because you actually LOVE food and the act of eating. And let me tell you, I love food. So, this post isn’t just about food, it is about GOOD food insauga.

It’s also about food being served in restaurants that have stood the test of time, and for good reason. Despite the overwhelming presence of chain restaurants – who boasts consistency in their food, are often so disappointingly inconsistent – these long standing restaurants are still here and everything that’s great about them has remained unchanged.

My ultimate top 5 (scratch that, my top 6):

1) Rua Vang (Golden Turtle):
God bless the Vietnamese people and this wonderful creation. For less than $10, you’ll get a huge bowl of pho and a drink at this tried and true establishment. They don’t skimp on the noodles and meat in your pho and the broth doesn’t taste watered down like other pho restaurants. It has a very rich taste, without the fatty bits swimming in the bowl. This is the only place insauga where I actually make an effort to finish the entire bowl.

Recommends: The Special Pho! Mmmmm tripe

2) Noodle Wok:
In my opinion, the only thing that has changed about this restaurant is its name (it used be to called “Noodle Delight” back in the day). Besides that, nothing else has changed. I was there recently and the food is still prepared the same way as it was when I was in high school, by the same cooks too. Awesome. Noodle Wok continues to serve huge portions at a reasonable price. Don’t be put off by the décor; you’re not there to be wined and dined.

Recommends: Beef and Egg on Rice and Shrimp Wontons. Honestly, basically anything on the menu is great! I think I’ve tried mostly everything they serve here. Seriously.

3) Snug Harbour:
Not only does this restaurant have one of the most beautiful views insauga, it also serves great food consistently. I have been going to this restaurant for many years and the food is still delicious and surprisingly fresh. The service is great too. This is the perfect restaurant in the summer.

Recommends: Rainbow Trout, Cajun Catfish, and Grouper Sandwich

4) Grano Ristorante:
Grano is definitely one of our city’s hidden gems. It’s tucked away in Enfield Place and is one of those restaurants where you can go for a romantic dinner or have a girls’ night out. It is a small space, so I suggest calling ahead and making a reservation. Although not known for its great service, the food is always on point. And honestly, if the food is that great, I can overlook questionable service. I’ll take the abuse, Grano! I mean, everyone is entitled to a bad day or two.

Recommends: Spaghettini al Pesto and Veal Parm

5) Skyway Jack’s:

Honestly, if you’re one of those people who skip breakfast in the morning, you’re missing out. This place has one of the best Eggs Benedict and hashbrowns in the city, and to top it off, the service is friendly and efficient. Good luck finding a seat during the weekend though. We’ve often driven away from this place, feeling dejected, due to the long line up. But if you happen to find a seat, then your day is off to a great start…whether you’re starting your day at 9am, or at 2pm (no judging!).

Recommends: Eggs Benny, French Toast, Sausage and Hashbrowns

6) Fred’s Bar and Grill:
Yah, I added a 6th restaurant to my Top 5. How could I not add Fred’s to this list? Their food has remained unchanged since I started going here over 10 years ago. The staff is great and the food is beyond satisfying. I’ve watched many hockey games on the big screen and caught up with my crew here. I love this place. It’s chill and friendly, exactly what Mississauga is all about.

Recommends: Wings and Pitcher Special and Grilled Calamari

This list is only the beginning. There are a lot of good restaurants insauga, so I’ll continually update this list. I thought I’d start off with these five (nope, actually, six) restaurants since each place has provided me with so many memories and truly define what food means to me. Thanks to the customers who continue to visit these restaurants, and the owners too, for deciding to keep their business open! THANK YOU!

Please feel free to comment and add your fave restaurant.

Disclaimer: Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hatin’ on chain restaurants. I was at Milestone’s over a month ago and enjoyed the baked goat cheese & garlic flatbread plate there.
