Just east of Hurontario, Dundas is all mature buildings and long-standing plazas housing everything from jewellery stores to spartan ethnic restos with, believe it or not, functioning and occupied apartments on top (a rare throwback to a bygone era). For that reason, it's striking to see a decidedly modern restaurant—one that's all pristine white wood and chic aquamarine accents—in an aging white plaza that shows the city's age. Kantene, a brand new comfort food restaurant that combines counter and table service, is breathing culinary life into Cooksville—and it's doing so with classic dishes. Specializing in fusion cuisine, the restaurant excels with its absolutely delicious vegetarian pizza (topped with eggplant and zucchini), flavourful feta-covered lamb burger (complete with a fresh bun from the Rose Bakery next door) and indulgent hand cut fries. You don’t want to miss that pizza.
This is a hidden gem in Mississauga. Their menu is full of amazing options ranging from the famous Colombian platter, the bandeja paisa, to empanadas, patacons, arepas, and so much more. One thing I've learned about South American cuisine is that they know how to make a delectable beef tongue! If you aren't used to it, you may be a tad grossed out by it all, but if you ever muster the courage or are a fan of beef tongue, you have to try it at La Bonita! Cooked to absolute perfection, this meal comes with potatoes, rice, salad, and yucca! These options can be substituted upon request. Finally, their Churrasco. A one inch, AAA sirloin steak that comes out on a sizzling hot plate with chimichurri and all kinds of other flavour! As a side, this dish comes with an entire plate of rice, beans, and sweet plantain; both plates for a very fair $19! La Bonita will make you want to book your next flight to Bogota in a hurry!
Piatto is a long-standing Sauga gem that’s been loyally serving diners since 1989. A fine dining resto on the ground floor of an old-style house-turned-spa at the corner of Dundas and Mississauga Road, the resto boasts an old school but lively vibe and is always full of regulars. The service is attentive and accommodating—something that keeps loyal diners coming back for more on special occasions. The menu reflects Chef Abramo Tonelli's classical Italian cuisine, blended with a touch of French. Born in Argentina and of Italian descent, his daily blackboard specials are abundant in seafood options and other well crafted selections.
2) Border MX
This authentic Mexican place has garnered a lot of attention since it opened because Mississauga doesn't have many Mexican joints like it. The chef is from Mexico, so she knows her stuff and makes truly authentic dishes in her Mexican kitchen. The menu offers traditional Mexican dishes, including fajitas, tamales, flautas and pork carnitas. The resto began wowing people when it opened its first location right in the heart of Cooksville. After a few years, the resto moved to Streetsville, essentially amping up the quaint village’s growing Mexican food scene. Known for its friendly service and delicious food, it’s quickly become a Mississauga mainstay for a reason.
1) Laari Adda
Laari Adda, an Indian and Pakistani street food restaurant, recently took shape in the old Bistro Narra location in the Thomas St. and Winston Churchill area and it's serving up some very fine South Asian cuisine. The restaurant, which is open late, offers dine-in, takeout and catering service. It also offers a bright and colourful interior that draws upon the vibrant decor frequently encountered in India and Pakistan. As far as food goes, restaurant operators say that “Laari Addas in Pakistan are famous for delicious street food and that is exactly what we are bringing back with a modern twist.” One such modern menu item? Nutella parathas. The resto also offers delicious butter chicken, great service and exceptional ambiance.
