5) Pho Ngoc Yen
No matter what month it is, there's no food more satisfying or comforting than pho—a signature Vietnamese soup famous for its flavourful broth and hearty toppings. And although most Vietnamese places do pho justice, some produce astounding and exquisite noodle soup (and pork and mango salad and spring rolls, of course) and pair it with an absolutely unforgettable atmosphere. One of those gems is the newly opened Pho Ngoc Yen, a beautifully decorated and stunningly tasty Vietnamese resto that just took shape on Kamato Road in the Tomken and 401 area in Mississauga. As far as food goes, the steaming hot rare beef pho stands up against hearty, delicious soup served in Hanoi. So, too, do the crispy Vietnamese spring rolls, served with delicate, subtle fish sauce. Other commendable dishes include the flavourful and authentic pad Thai—a dish that gets extra points for its spectacular presentation—and the vermicelli with pork. Although this restaurant is hidden, it's already getting a reputation for being authentic and delicious. You don't want to miss this one, even if it's nowhere near your office.
Located at the Chinese Centre on Dundas Street is Blue Lagoon Seafood Master (you gotta love that name!), a higher-end Chinese food and dim sum restaurant. As you walk in, you are greeted by a wall full of sea creatures that are at your disposal to eat fresh. You will see everything from huge Alaskan king crabs to lobsters to eel to fresh fish swimming in blue tanks. This place is absolutely massive and can easily seat 250 people. There are four huge projection screens that were teaching diners how to properly cook Chinese food. We tried the set dinner for two which came with braised blue lagoon soup, eel that was freshly skinned for us minutes before, deep-fried lobster Hong Kong-style, oysters, lobster soup, fish soup and dessert for $98. Although this dinner was made for two, it could have easily fed three. This place is a bit on the pricey side, but the food is very high quality and flavourful. The dim sum is costly as well, but the menu items are a little higher-end. As you can tell by the name, this place does specialize in seafood but does have some traditional non-seafood dishes like Peking duck and sweet and sour pork.
The Wilcox Gastropub is located on the corner of Hurontario and Eglinton and is situated in the Wilcox House - one of Mississauga's oldest Heritage Homes which features Greek and Gothic detailing and was built by Amos and Charles Wilcox in 1850. In a place that serves everything from pork sliders to poutine, Scotch egg, ceviche, cassava frites, braised short ribs, an 18oz bone-in rib eye steak and confit of duck leg I'm going straight to the burger. This is one of their signature dishes here called The Wilcox Burger and it didn't disappoint. The beef is grounded daily and the only one on this list that actually bakes their brioche buns daily. Now that's dedication!
The Maharaja is an incredibly stunning boutique restaurant inspired by the regal beauty of India's diverse landscape of architecture and flavours. The concept offers a visual and culinary journey through three magnificent palaces of India and a menu featuring cuisine from four different regions in India. The storybook menu is divided into four regional cuisines found in India which have been influenced by various ingredients and flavours of a variety of countries including Greece, West and Central Asia and Persia. There are a number of shareable dishes and entrees highlighting the unique flavours of each region through Awadhi cuisine, classic Hyderabadi cuisine, Punjabi cuisine and Rajputana cuisine. The extensive menu caters to all palates and features distinct regional dishes presented on fine dishes such as copper bowls, slate boards, and copper table top grill.
This exceedingly creative gem sits on the Mississauga and Brampton border and offers an incredible array of North American and Indian fusion dishes. It's truly one of a kind, and offers such creative concoctions as jerk chicken samosas, apple pie samosas, butter chicken mac n' cheese, butter chicken loaded fries and, most importantly, the Punjabi cheeseburger with tandoori bacon. Founded by Rick Matharu, a Recipe to Riches winner who took the top spot for his butter chicken lasagna, the restaurant does something decidedly unique and pays homage to two distinct food cultures. This is not a place you want to miss.
