Located on the corner of Eglinton and Tomken is a place that you’ve passed by hundreds of times called Peter’s on Eglinton. When you first walk in you, can’t help but think that this is what all restaurants looked like in high-end hotels in the 70s. A quick scan of this place and it’s obvious it’s geared towards an older audience, and low and behold, Hazel McCallion was having her dinner in the booth next to me. I did see a lot of families here and why not? This place is very nice inside, spacious and the food is oh so good with huge portions.
This exceedingly creative gem sits on the Mississauga and Brampton border and offers an incredible array of North American and Indian fusion dishes. It’s truly one of a kind, and offers such creative concoctions as jerk chicken samosas, apple pie samosas, butter chicken mac n’ cheese, butter chicken loaded fries and, most importantly, the Punjabi cheeseburger with tandoori bacon. Founded by Rick Matharu, a Recipe to Riches winner who took the top spot for his butter chicken lasagna, the restaurant does something decidedly unique and pays homage to two distinct food cultures. This is not a burger you want to miss.
This hidden gem (lost in the industrial area by Costco on Dundas) is a place that's popular among the regulars—and for good reason. This place offers great dim sum (and it's almost never as busy as the nearby Summit Garden) and a reliably tasty dinner menu. Perfect Kitchen, though quaint, is a little fancier in terms of decor. The food here is absolutely delicious, so it's worth the trip—even if you don't live in the area. The service is reliably friendly even though the resto tends to get busy and the atmosphere was perfect. Bonus tip: this place serves great dim sum on weekends.
Imagine you've been whisked away to a Queen West bar. Ever since it opened, this place has been crazy. Even on weeknights, when other bars in the area are dead, this place is bursting at the seams with people and for good reason. Get ready to be amazed. Every aspect of this place — including the space and menu — has been designed with the utmost thought to detail. Although the food menu is only about five per cent of entire menu (there are only 13 items), you will find interesting takes on southern classics, such as chicken and waffles, Rub Me the Right Way beef brisket, Boars Gone Wild smoked sausage, bison chipotle frank, blackened shrimp and gumbo cheddar grits and the boss platter (BBQ sampler platter). All of meat is smoked with SmokinLicious' cherry wood and sugar maple wood chips, which "gives a nice sweetness to meat."
You'd be forgiven if you said you'd never heard of this tucked-away gem on Enfield Place, right behind the Sussex Centre. It's not visible from the street, but its central location and unique menu brimming with Southern Indian vegetarian cuisine puts this pleasant finding high on our list of must-visit Indian restos. The cafe, intimate and decorated in dark, rich hues, offers diners the chance to sample medu vada (a sort of savory doughnut), various dosas (crepe-like wraps) and South Indian Thali, a mini five-course meal served with a pickle, pappad, yogurt, buttermilk, sambar, rasam, poriyal, dal or kootu, gravy, rice of the day, white rice, chapati or poori and the dessert of the day. The Thali is served on a round platter with rice in the center and, despite sounding overwhelming, isn't too much for one person to finish. Diners looking for an even more authentic experience can enjoy a masala chai (tea) after their meal. The fair price point, attentive service and highly customizable menu (you can specify spice, oil and texture level for dosas) makes this inconspicuous vegetarian resto more than worth the search.
