No matter what month it is, there's no food more satisfying or comforting than pho—a signature Vietnamese soup famous for its flavourful broth and hearty toppings. And although most Vietnamese places do pho justice, some produce astounding and exquisite noodle soup (and pork and mango salad and spring rolls, of course) and pair it with an absolutely unforgettable atmosphere. One of those gems is the newly opened Pho Ngoc Yen, a beautifully decorated and stunningly tasty Vietnamese resto that just took shape on Kamato Road in the Tomken and 401 area in Mississauga. As far as food goes, the steaming hot rare beef pho stands up against hearty, delicious soup served in Hanoi. So, too, do the crispy Vietnamese spring rolls, served with delicate, subtle fish sauce. Other commendable dishes include the flavourful and authentic pad Thai—a dish that gets extra points for its spectacular presentation—and the vermicelli with pork. Although this restaurant is hidden, it's already getting a reputation for being authentic and delicious. You don't want to miss this one, even if it's nowhere near your office.


3) Laari Adda

Laari Adda, an Indian and Pakistani street food restaurant, recently took shape in the old Bistro Narra location in the Thomas St. and Winston Churchill area and it’s serving up some very fine South Asian cuisine. The restaurant, which is open late, offers dine-in, takeout and catering service. It also offers a bright and colourful interior that draws upon the vibrant decor frequently encountered in India and Pakistan. As far as food goes, restaurant operators say that "Laari Addas in Pakistan are famous for delicious street food and that is exactly what we are bringing back with a modern twist." One such modern menu item? Nutella parathas. The resto also offers delicious butter chicken, great service and exceptional ambiance. 


2) Casalinga Ristorante

Located in a plaza at the southwest corner of Mississauga on Royal Windsor and Southdown (yes, that is still Mississauga) is one of the best kept Italian restaurants in the city called Casalinga. This place can't be any bigger than 40 seats and gets packed pretty fast, especially on weekends. They offer house-made gnocchi (small dumplings made from potato, semolina or flour that are usually served with sauce) and house-made gnocchi is usually hard to find, especially in Mississauga. That right there says a lot about the restaurant. We ordered the potato gnocchi that came with lamb, caramelized onions, cherry tomatoes, roasted garlic, mushrooms and tomato sauce. The dish was absolutely delicious and the gnocchi melted in our mouths. You won't be hungry after eating something this generously portioned. They also have thin crust pizza cooked in a stone oven. Casalinga has been around for just over three years, and if they keep serving this hearty Italian food, they will be here for generations to come.


1) The Port House Social Bar & Kitchen

You know how the old saying goes--when one door closes, another one opens. In this case, the closure of long-standing restobar Ten Restaurant + Wine Bar led to the opening of the brand Port House Social Bar and Kitchen. Recently, the “premium casual” restaurant and lounge opened its doors and is now offering a fairly extensive wine, cocktail and dine-in menu. In terms of beverages, the resto boasts a healthy cocktail list and a decent assortment of on tap beer, including Shock Top and Goose Island IPA. As far as wine goes, the offerings are extensive (as they should be). Vino aficionados can sip on Kim Crawford’s New Zealand Pinot Noir, Argentine Malbecs, Italian Pinot Grigios and more. As far as food goes, the resto offers calamari, hot Korean wings, tuna poke wontons, a variety of pizzas, signature burgers, salmon, fish and chips, gnocchi rose, a $139 Tomahawk steak dinner for two and more. The spacious and stylish resto will no doubt fill the void left by Ten.
