This exceedingly creative gem sits on the Mississauga and Brampton border and offers an incredible array of North American and Indian fusion dishes. It's truly one of a kind, and offers such creative concoctions as jerk chicken samosas, apple pie samosas, butter chicken mac n' cheese, butter chicken loaded fries and, most importantly, the Punjabi cheeseburger with tandoori bacon. Founded by Rick Matharu, a Recipe to Riches winner who took the top spot for his butter chicken lasagna, the restaurant does something decidedly unique and pays homage to two distinct food cultures. This is not a burger you want to miss.
Lissa Genobaga and Damian Kubarski are a husband and wife team who are self-proclaimed foodies and steadfast local supporters who love their community in Clarkson - an undiscovered area of the city that has a number of gems including theirs: a brunch spot called Kravingz. The resto is unique for its made-from-scratch menu that supports local suppliers. They source a number of the ingredients for their dishes from local bakeries and suppliers such as Manila Bakery’s specialty - a Filipino bread roll known as pandesal, produce from A.J. Lanzarotta, and other ingredients from Truscott Bakery and Sheridan Meats. Their signature dish is The Flip Side (house made longanisa which is a Filipino sausage served with crunchy garlic rice and a fried egg), The Polski Benedict (potato placki is a Polish potato pancake served with smoked salmon or peameal bacon, poached eggs and house made hollandaise), Chicken N’ Waffles (crispy fried chicken served with bacon and jalapeno waffles, bacon dressing and coleslaw) and The Islander (jerk corned beef hash, corn and cheddar grits and poached eggs) are so far the most popular.
This authentic Mexican place has garnered a lot of attention since it opened because Mississauga doesn't have many Mexican joints like it. The chef is from Mexico, so she knows her stuff and makes truly authentic dishes in her Mexican kitchen. The menu offers traditional Mexican dishes, including fajitas, tamales, flautas and pork carnitas. Friday and Saturday nights are reserved for Chef Rico's regional Mexican specials such as Tongue Tacos (self-explanatory) and Pozole (a soup made of pork or chicken broth with hominy and other garnishes). And while the restaurant recently closed its first ever location in Cooksville, it's happily serving customers at its brand new location in Streetsville.
Avani, located at Mavis and Matheson, gets extra points for being a unique Indian and Asian cuisine fusion restaurant. Spacious and elegant with its use of deep colours and linen tablecloths, its extensive menu offers a pakora platter, spring rolls, samosa rolls, butter chicken, chicken haryali and pad Thai. Seeing the exquisitely prepared chicken haryali was probably the most joyous part of the meal. The savory, tender chicken dish — known for its electric green colour, thanks to its coriander marinade — was exceptional. The presentation was also top notch, with a thin layer of cream adorning the slightly tough butter chicken. The aforementioned samosa rolls were also a hit, fusing Indian and Asian cuisine by stuffing a spring roll wrapper with samosa filling.
You know how the old saying goes--when one door closes, another one opens. In this case, the closure of long-standing restobar Ten Restaurant + Wine Bar led to the opening of the brand Port House Social Bar and Kitchen. Recently, the “premium casual” restaurant and lounge opened its doors and is now offering a fairly extensive wine, cocktail and dine-in menu. In terms of beverages, the resto boasts a healthy cocktail list and a decent assortment of on tap beer, including Shock Top and Goose Island IPA. As far as wine goes, the offerings are extensive (as they should be). Vino aficionados can sip on Kim Crawford’s New Zealand Pinot Noir, Argentina Malbecs, Italian Pinot Grigios and more. As far as food goes, the resto offers calamari, hot Korean wings, tuna poke wontons, a variety of pizzas, signature burgers, salmon, fish and chips, gnocchi rose ,a $139 Tomahawk steak dinner for two and more. The spacious and stylish resto will no doubt fill the void left by Ten.
