1) The Wilcox

The Wilcox Gastropub (featured in cover photo) is located on the corner of Hurontario and Eglinton and is situated in the Wilcox House - one of Mississauga’s oldest Heritage Homes which features Greek and Gothic detailing and was built by Amos and Charles Wilcox in 1850. In a place that serves everything from pork sliders to poutine, Scotch egg, ceviche, cassava frites, braised short ribs, an18oz bone-in rib eye steak and confit of duck leg I’m going straight to the burger. This is one of their signature dishes here called The Wilcox Burger and it didn’t disappoint. The beef is grounded daily and the only one on this list that actually bakes their brioche buns daily. Now that’s dedication!


2) Union Social

Located in the northwest end of Mississauga by the huge Royal Bank building off the 401, is a non-chain restaurant called Union Social Eatery. The restaurant has an airy, open concept feel with a bar lined with large flat screen TVs that sits center stage. The lounge area is to the right and the dining area to the left. Everything is made in-house, including their signature sauces, in-house smoked wings and hand-cut Yukon Gold fries. You know a place is doing well when they open up their first location in Mississauga and then expand into Toronto. Usually it’s the other way around. This is the case for Union Social Eatery, who opened their second location at Yonge and St. Clair. They are doing something right along with dishing out good food!


3) Capra's Kitchen

Look out Mississauga! Chef Massimo Capra and his signature 'stache and big personality are in our city. Chef Massimo recently opened a restaurant called Capra's Kitchen in his hometown of Mississauga in the former Villa La Bella space along Lakeshore Rd. in the Clarkson neighbourhood. Chef Massimo is an accomplished celebrity chef, TV personality, author and Saugaboy who has an extensive resume. Starting from the ground up, his career began when he first started toiling in kitchens in Italy. He made his way to Toronto in the early 80s and worked in a few notable fine dining establishments in the city. His brand new restaurant offers lunch, dinner and weekend brunch and his menu is full of delicious, classic Italian fare that’s sure to leave every diner satisfied.


4) Barbecue Times

Diners who enjoy cooking and grilling meat at their tables have one more restaurant option outside of hotpot and Korean BBQ (not that there's anything wrong with either of those restos!). Barbecue Times, a cultural fusion BBQ joint that's the first of its kind in North America, recently opened its door in the QEW and Erin Mills Parkway area. As for how it works, diners can choose from a wide array of Indian, Chinese and North American cuisines at a buffet and grill and cook their chosen meats on a charcoal grill that's built right into their table. Diners who are looking for something a little more exciting than plain cooked meat can also enjoy burgers and wraps. So, if you're in the mood for a cross-cultural bbq experience, this place might be more than worth checking out.


5) The Port House Social Bar & Kitchen

You know how the old saying goes—when one door closes, another one opens. In this case, the closure of long-standing restobar Ten Restaurant + Wine Bar has led to the opening of the brand Port House Social Bar and Kitchen. Recently, the "premium casual" restaurant and lounge opened its doors and is now offering a fairly extensive wine, cocktail and dine-in menu. In terms of beverages, the resto boasts a healthy cocktail list and a decent assortment of on tap beer, including Shock Top and Goose Island IPA. As far as wine goes, the offerings are extensive (as they should be). Vino aficionados can sip on Kim Crawford's New Zealand Pinot Noir, Argentina Malbecs, Italian Pinot Grigios and more. As far as food goes, the resto offers calamari, hot Korean wings, tuna poke wontons, a variety of pizzas, signature burgers, salmon, fish and chips, gnocchi rose, a $139 Tomahawk steak dinner for two and more. The spacious and stylish resto will no doubt fill the void left by Ten.
