MyKolachi Karahi & Barbeque House, an upscale Pakistani restaurant, opened its doors in November and is already impressing customers with its unique interior (think dramatic purple hues with pops of vibrant accent colours, traditional cookware suspended from the ceiling, eye-catching murals, esoteric pop culture shout-outs and prayer rooms) and impressive menu. One thing you need to order at MyKolachi? The karahi. The karahi features bone-in or boneless chicken cooked with garlic, tomatoes and MyKolachi’s house blend of karahi spices. The dish, made fresher with a generous helping of sliced ginger, is both fragrant and flavourful--and it’s not the only meat dish to write home about. MyKolachi also offers some pretty unforgettable kababs that you won’t really want to share with your tablemates (but you should).
Before we start talking about the food and the restaurant, we’ve got to say that we love the name and where Michael’s is located. The setup is so unlike anything else in Mississauga, as it is located at the back of a building in Clarkson off Lakeshore Road and is almost a secret because it’s completely hidden from public view. As you park in the back alley, you will find a glass solarium protruding from the back. It’s almost like you are walking into a secret location. We love the risotto pescatore, which has risotto with shrimp, scallops, fresh tomatoes and white wine. This is a perfect place for a date and they even have a piano room that can accommodate 40 people (so it's great for a corporate dinner). They also have a wine room for up to 16, which is great for family parties when you just don’t want to cook at home. Michael’s is expanding so much that it might have a front door one day. Also, Michael’s Back Door has been around since 1981, so you know they’re doing something right.

Chef Massimo recently opened a restaurant called Capra's Kitchen in his hometown of Mississauga in the former Villa La Bella space along Lakeshore Rd. in the Clarkson neighbourhood. Chef Massimo is an accomplished celebrity chef, TV personality, author and Saugaboy who has an extensive resume. Starting from the ground up, his career began when he first started toiling in kitchens in Italy. He made his way to Toronto in the early 80s and worked in a few notable fine dining establishments in the city. His brand new restaurant offers lunch, dinner and weekend brunch and his menu is full of delicious, classic Italian fare that’s sure to leave every diner satisfied.

No matter what month it is, there's no food more satisfying or comforting than pho—a signature Vietnamese soup famous for its flavourful broth and hearty toppings. And although most Vietnamese places do pho justice, some produce astounding and exquisite noodle soup (and pork and mango salad and spring rolls, of course) and pair it with an absolutely unforgettable atmosphere. One of those gems is the newly opened Pho Ngoc Yen, a beautifully decorated and stunningly tasty Vietnamese resto that just took shape on Kamato Road in the Tomken and 401 area in Mississauga. As far as food goes, the steaming hot rare beef pho stands up against hearty, delicious soup served in Hanoi. So, too, do the crispy Vietnamese spring rolls, served with delicate, subtle fish sauce. Other commendable dishes include the flavourful and authentic pad Thai—a dish that gets extra points for its spectacular presentation—and the vermicelli with pork. Although this restaurant is hidden, it's already getting a reputation for being authentic and delicious. You don't want to miss this one, even if it's nowhere near your office.
Avani, located at Mavis and Matheson, gets extra points for being a unique Indian and Asian cuisine fusion restaurant. Spacious and elegant with its use of deep colours and linen tablecloths, its extensive menu offers a pakora platter, spring rolls, samosa rolls, butter chicken, chicken haryali and pad Thai. Seeing the exquisitely prepared chicken haryali was probably the most joyous part of the meal. The savory, tender chicken dish — known for its electric green colour, thanks to its coriander marinade — was exceptional. The presentation was also top notch, with a thin layer of cream adorning the slightly tough butter chicken. The aforementioned samosa rolls were also a hit, fusing Indian and Asian cuisine by stuffing a spring roll wrapper with samosa filling.
